Triangle Professor Facilitator of the Year Raleigh/Durham/RTP, NCDr. Stan Smedley, an adjunct business professor for North Carolina Wesleyan Colleges Adult Degree Program in the Triangle for over five years, has been selected as the 1999-2000 ADVANTAGE Facilitator of the Year. The Adult Degree Program is designed specifically for working adults who wish to complete their college degrees. Each year the schools that partner with Regis University, in Denver, Colorado, such as NC Wesleyan, can select one of its ADVANTAGE facilitators and nominate him/her for the "International Outstanding Facilitator of the Year" award made by Regis University later this year. Smedley is the nominee for 1999-2000. Last years nominee from the Raleigh and Durham/RTP locations, Dr. Keith Earnshaw, an adjunct professor of biology for NC Wesleyan, was selected as one of four International Outstanding Facilitators of 1998-99. The criteria for selecting Facilitator of the Year include evidence of outstanding effective classroom facilitation of learning techniques as well as achievement of course learning outcomes. An individuals involvement in non-classroom activities is also important. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Smedley has served on faculty assessment teams, strategic planning committees, and has coached and mentored new faculty members. Smedley is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Ph.D. in administration. He holds a master of business administration degree from Clemson University along with a master of science degree in sociology from NC State University. His undergraduate degree in business administration is from Wittenberg University. While at the Broyhill School of Management at Gardner-Webb University he was director of their MBA program. NCWC's ADVANTAGE PROGRAM offers highly motivated working adult students with strong work experience and a year or more of previous college credit an opportunity to complete their undergraduate degrees through highly accelerated courses. Through ADVANTAGE a student can earn the bachelor of science degree with a major in Business Administration. Offered in formats of five and eight weeks in length, all ADVANTAGE courses are the same as those taught in less accelerated formats. Currently offered at NCWC-Raleigh and NCWC-Durham/RTP, the ADVANTAGE PROGRAM is based on an innovative model developed by Regis University in Denver, Colorado. ADVANTAGE courses utilize discussion, group work, and extensive writing, to maximize the students experience of the course content and to broaden the scope of their knowledge. They provide the theoretical framework around which to organize experiential learning. The professor acts as a facilitator for learning rather than as a dispenser of wisdom. ADVANTAGE five-week classes are offered in nine terms throughout the calendar year. Eight-week classes are offered in six terms each year. Classes meet one night each week or Saturday mornings or mid-day for four hours. Also, some courses are offered in the afternoons on weekdays. To get more information about the ADVANTAGE PROGRAM or Adult Degree Program, contact the NCWC-Raleigh office at 919/863-3200, or the Durham/RTP office at 919-281-6100. North Carolina Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelors degrees in 22 majors to traditional-aged students on the Rocky Mount campus. NC Wesleyans Adult Degree Program is offered in Rocky Mount, Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Durham/RTP. # # # |
