Free Wrestling Event at NC Wesleyan Rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 1, 8 p.m.
Rocky Mount, NC- The one-night-only free event, NCWWA Wrestling, in the Dunn Center For Performing Arts at North Carolina Wesleyan College, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 1, at 8 p.m. Admission is free. For more information contact the Belk Box Office (252) 985-5197. NCWWA Wrestling is the final product of NC Wesleyan January-term class Theatre 192: Americas Popular Culture TheaterProfessional Wrestling. This event will feature Wesleyan students and four professional wrestlers from New Dimension Wrestling in Greensboro: Chilly Willy, Big Slam, Nightstick Eddie Brown, and Mike Gunner. The card is subject to change. Dr. John White, president of the College, plans to be the guest referee for one of the title student matches. The course was designed to give students a background of the popular entertainment, from the Roman era to todays professional wrestling. The 18 students in the class created wrestling promotions and characters based on their study of theatre. The students learned about pro-wrestling from the fan side and the business side. Chris Plano, owner of New Dimension Wrestling was brought in to speak to the class about the wrestling business. Rick Scaia, with Wrestle.com, which is owned by CBS, spoke about the use of the Internet by wrestling companies. Big Slam, Chilly Willy, and High Octane came to the class and spoke about life as a wrestler, the training involved, and gave tips on wrestling moves to the class. The class learned about the marketing and promotional aspects of wrestling. The class also went to Ohio to see WCW SOULED OUT, the January pay-per-view event, and Monday Nitro. There they were to go backstage to meet three WCW wrestlers. The class has been described as a lot of fun. Besides body slamming everyone, they learned it is about more than beating people up, they learned the creative side, and the theatrical aspects. Wrestling is the modern American ritual theatre that appeals to the masses. "Looking at it that way, we delved into why it has such a mass appeal, and continues to, even as it is getting bloodier, and sexier, and the morals are deteriorating. It is still getting more popular every day." Mike Burnett, instructor for the class. # # # |
