The East-meets-West story of "The King and I" is set in 1862 in Siam when an English widow and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. The stage has never been graced with such an elegant creation as this version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. The 1996 Broadway revival of "The King and I" received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival. The 1951 original production received five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Reviews were unanimous in agreeing that this is a hit! "In a word MAGNIFICENT!"-The New Yorker. In this lavish, vibrant production, Rodgers and Hammersteins most enchanting score is brought to life, including memorable songs like "I Whistle A Happy Tune," "Getting to Know You," "Hello, Young Lovers," "We Kiss in a Shadow," "I Have Dreamed," and "Shall We Dance." This performance is sponsored in part by Oldies 107.9 FM. # # # |
