"The Lion in Winter" at NC Wesleyan March 8-11 Rocky Mount, NCJames Goldmans "The Lion in Winter" will be produced March 8-11 by North Carolina Wesleyan College Theatre. All performances begin at 8 p.m., and tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. The subject is not suited for children under 12. Call the Belk Box Office at (252) 985-5197 for tickets. The production centers around King Henry II of England, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their three sons, John, Richard, and Geoffrey, as they grapple to take control of the royal throne as Henry approaches the end of his life. The play was written by Goldman in 1966 and enjoyed a short run of only 83 performances in New York. As Goldman says, "and then the film came." The motion picture version of "The Lion in Winter" was nominated for seven Academy awards and won three. Its success made the play much more popular and has provided extraordinary interest in the story in the last thirty years. Currently, a national touring company is producing the play. Wesleyans production is being directed and designed by Michael Burnett, adjunct theatre professor and the technical director of the Dunn Center. Burnett has elected to set the audience and actors together on stage for the run of the play. Audience members will have an unusual perspective, such as that of being in a theatre-in-the-round, as they sit on the massive Minges Auditorium stage in cushioned chairs on risers. This staging technique will bring every audience member within inches of the players as they deceive, plot, and fight for control of 12th century England. The script is written in contemporary language, making it very accessible for any audience member, although it is suggested for ages twelve and up. Cast in the production are NC Wesleyan students: Tony Morrone, of Toms River, N.J., as Henry II; Alli Dore, from Rocky Mount, as Eleanor of Aquitaine; Mary Wilson, of Raleigh, as Alase; Jimmy Addison, of Durham, as John; Larry Fellows, from Walkersville, Md., as Geoffrey; Jamie Hunt, from Baltimore, Md., as Richard; and Sam Scott, from Rocky Mount, as Philip, King of France. Assistant directors are Brandy Rivers of Henderson, N.C., and Rick Wise from Berryville, Va. The stage manager is Meghan Lancaster of Wilmington, N.C. In addition to the evening performances at 8 p.m., the production will be staged for high school students in four daytime performances, March 7-10, at 10 a.m. Teachers interested in bringing students, and others patrons desiring reserved seating, which is limited due to the staging technique, should contact the Belk Box Office at 252-985-5197. # # # |
