Environmental Terrorism Talk at NC Wesleyan, Feb. 28

Rocky Mount, NC—The public is invited to a presentation by Dr. William Hunt on "Dealing with Environmental Terrorism – Lessons from the Kuwait Oil Fires," in the Powers Recital Hall at the Dunn Center at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The free event is on Monday, February 28, at 3 p.m.

Dr. William F. Hunt, Jr., a visiting senior scientist at North Carolina State University in the department of statistics and member of the Environmental Programs and Services offered by NCSU, will be here as part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) College Consortium Series. He was selected by the NC Wesleyan Science Club students and faculty.

Dr. Hunt served as the deputy team leader of the Persian Gulf Risk Evaluation Team, which dealt with the air pollution problem resulting from the Kuwait oil fires. He directed an interagency team of scientists from the military, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Energy and the State Department in dealing with the fires. The mission of the Evaluation Team was to (1) determine if there was an acute health effect associated with hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter levels to which Americans and our allies were exposed; (2) identify and determine the magnitude of the gaseous and particulate matter products resulting from the fires; (3) determine if air pollution was threatening areas where Americans are located; and (4) determine the impact of the war on the Kuwait and Saudi Arabian health infrastructure and its ability to respond to the crisis.

Dr. Hunt’s talk will deal with the assessment of air pollution and a discussion on the plan of action that was developed. Recommendations for dealing with an environmental emergency of this type in the future, should a similar act of environmental terrorism occur, will also be addressed.
