Smalls Endow New Scholarship Fund at NC Wesleyan
Rocky Mount, NC - Beverly and Gaston Small have endowed a scholarship fund in their names. They made a donation of property to North Carolina Wesleyan College, which the College then sold and started an endowed scholarship for the sale price of the property, $27,000. The Smalls live in Elizabeth City, N.C., and have a farm in nearby Weeksville, where they are members of Newbegun United Methodist Church. Beverly, a member of the Wesleyan Board of Trustees, is a very active layperson in the United Methodist Church. She is a member of the board of visitors for the Divinity School of Duke University, a lay speaker in the church, and serves on a number of committees for the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. They are also the parents of Anita Small Oldham, wife of North Carolina Wesleyan Chaplain Kirk Oldham.
The scholarship fund is designated for students in good standing, with preference given to residents of Pasquotank County, North Carolina. North Carolina Wesleyan can award the scholarships to deserving students who would not otherwise be able to attend college because of financial need. It will award students who demonstrate good citizenship, leadership, and participation in school and/or the community where they live.
North Carolina Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor's degrees in 22 majors to traditional-aged students on the Rocky Mount campus. NC Wesleyan also offers an adult degree program geared to working adults, with classes in Rocky Mount, and at additional teaching sites in Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Durham.
