NC Wesleyan Brings Russian Art Exhibit Oct. 21

October 15, 1998

Rocky Mount, NC—The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! North Carolina Wesleyan College is pleased to exhibit artworks for sale from the Masterpiece Art Gallery in Durham, N.C. From traditional Russian Orthodox Church Icons, Faberge-style eggs, and contemporary abstract oil paintings, this exhibition begins October 21 and continues until December 20. The exhibit featured in the Mims Gallery, Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, at NC Wesleyan is "The New Russians: From Tradi tional Icons and Faberge to Contemporary Abstract Painting - Art Exhibition from Masterpiece Art, Durham, NC."

Julia Tarasava, the director of Masterpiece Art Gallery, will be taking the public through the exhibit and speaking about the traditions of Russian art in the Mims Gallery at 7 p.m., Saturday, November 7, on a free Dunn Center Family Entertainment Nigh t.

The New Russians are a group of contemporary painters who represent the full spectra of what one finds Russia’s art world today. Rudolph Kesarev from St. Petersburg is an icon "writer" who paints with traditional egg tempera as dictated by the Orthodox Church. A number of excellent landscape painters, like Vladimir Yashkov and Andrei Blinov highlight the Russian countryside in oils. Surrealist painter Aleksandr Gerasimov presents us with a nostalgic dream world, where abstract painter Vladim de Skopin continues the explorations of the early twentieth century Russian avante garde.

You might say that The New Russians have something for every one. We hope that you will join us at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, for this exciting occasion. Phone 985-5268 for information.
