Wesleyan Adult Students Inducted in Honor Society

Rocky Mount, NC -- The Adult Degree Programs of North Carolina Wesleyan College conducted an induction ceremony, Sunday, October 20, for new members of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for adults in higher education. New members inducted included Sharon Batchelor, from Rocky Mount; from Raleigh: Richard Allman, Lisa Elder, John Firment, James Hobbs, William Hurst, Sandra Low, Sharon Massey, Rachel Pratt, Joanna Sorbi, Kristine Sparacio, and Roberta Stike; from the Goldsboro teaching site: Steve Farrell, Wayne Cowan, Paige Learnard, Darlene Leyva, and Richard Muntean; and from the New Bern site: Cassandra Richards, and Teresa Sartin.

Fifty adult students from the College's four teaching sites in Rocky Mount, Raleigh, Goldsboro and New Bern, were invited to join the honorary society. The criteria for membership included that students maintain a minimum 3.7 grade point average (out of a total 4.0); students must rank in the highest ten percent of those who qualify; and must have completed a minimum of 30 adult degree program semester hours, of which 15 should consist of credits in the liberal arts and sciences.

Carey Fleming, an Alpha Sigma Lambda member from the Raleigh extension site, addressed the group. Others that participated in the ceremony were Pam Fennell, a Raleigh member who spoke on the significance of the motto; Kim Sparks, Rocky Mount member, who addressed the significance of the symbols; and Susan Burley, a Raleigh member, who discussed the pledge of membership. New members pledged their membership, and received certificates and lapel insignia pins.

The ceremony was held in the Powers Recital Hall, in the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. A reception in the Carlton Board Room followed the induction ceremony and tours were held for the Dunn Center. Society members plan a spring activity for all members from the four sites.
